In Other News, I'm Still Fairly Rubbish.
More Metal Gear Solid! I am now up to the point at which Meryl opens the cargo door. Thoughts:

- Kira is obviously at work here.

- I love that the Game Over screen shouts 'YOU IDIOT' at you if you run into the wires and detonate the C4 during the Revolver Ocelot battle. I was sort of hoping for the same when I tripped the infrared sensor in the cargo hold, but instead I had Mei Ling sobbing at me, which isn't nearly as fun.

- Whilst I would love to be able to claim that I deliberately tripped the infrared sensor in the cargo hold to see the Game Over screen, I'm afraid I really am that useless.

- Speaking of the cargo hold death: that is a beautiful bit of cruelty on the part of the game designers. You trip the sensors; the doors close; the chamber fills with gas. Then the game gives control back to you. You can't do anything! All you can do is run around in helpless little circles, watching as your oxygen meter depletes. Snake will even eat rations if you have them equipped, thus prolonging his inevitable, miserable fate. That's just not nice, Metal Gear Solid.

- I really, really wish it were possible to change the camera angle without going into First-Person Mode and thus sacrificing one's mobility.

- I am also mildly irritated by the guards' apparent ability to hear the exclamation marks popping up above each other's heads. One sees you, and instantly they all somehow know where you are! Telepathic communication is cheating, guards.

- That said, I probably shouldn't begrudge the guards a bit of cheating, given that, despite their allegedly superior sight and hearing, they are incapable of spotting someone a bit too far down the corridor in front of them.

- I enjoyed the Revolver Ocelot battle quite a lot, actually. Probably my favourite part of the game so far. (This is not only because it involved the game calling me an idiot, but I'll confess that was a factor.) I was terrified that I was going to run out of bullets, though.

- My goodness, this game has some long cutscenes. I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan, and even I am daunted. It wouldn't be nearly so bad if they could be paused, but no: your options are 'skip' and 'watch', and that's it. Sometimes the telephone rings, Konami! Sometimes one simply doesn't have time for an unexpected ten-minute cutscene!

- I became very excited at the first mention of Hal Emmerich. I DON'T KNOW WHY I AM SO EXCITED BY THIS. I'VE NEVER PLAYED A METAL GEAR GAME BEFORE. I know barely anything about Otacon; why does the prospect of meeting him thrill me so much?

- Have I mentioned that I find Snake's lack of facial hair extremely confusing? From what little I'd gleaned of the Metal Gear Solid series (my sources being mostly [info]firefly99, videogame magazines and Super Smash Bros), I was under the impression that facial hair on Solid Snake was absolutely necessary. It's a bit like stumbling across some old footage of Derren Brown and discovering that he doesn't have a goatee in it. (If you do know of any images or videos of Derren Brown without a goatee, please keep them to yourself; I don't think I would be able to cope.)

My goodness, this game has some long cutscenes.

I hear the opening cutscene of MSG4 is an hour and a half long.

...

The opening cutscene?

The opening cutscene?

Did Kojima forget he wasn't supposed to be making a film and suddenly remember an hour and a half in?

This is a lie.

It's more like twenty-five minutes.

Even were it an hour and a half long, I've just realised that I can't really judge after playing through Kingdom Hearts II's four-hour introduction. There was gameplay involved there, admittedly, but still. A four-hour introduction.

I thought an hour and a half seemed ridiculous. I was lied to!

It is ridiculous, but it says a lot about the game that people actually believed it.

No. No, it wasn't a lie, that's the ending cutscene.

Kira is obviously at work here.

Don't say things like that! It fits too perfectly, and I don't want to risk it integrating itself into my personal cannon.

It should be in everyone's personal canon! It should be in the canonical canon, and I shall be very disappointed if there turns out to be some other explanation.

RETURNING TO YOUR POINTS IN ORDER

- See this comic.

- They toned it down to Ocelot saying 'You stupid fool' in the remake, which is more in character for him but kind of less fun. :(

- That room gets me every time.

- YES I KNOW. MGS is the cruellest series ever. It kind of goes from offhanded mocking in this game, to kicking you in the shins in MGS2, to stabbing you in MGS3, to throwing you down a mineshaft and then setting you on fire in MGS4, which is the only game ever to traumatise me.

- Yeah, lots of people thought the same way. Sadly, you don't get a mobile camera until MGS3 Subsistence. Try and think of it as a 2D game, it really helps. Also, radar.

- I can't really think of anything to say to this. I SUPPOSE I LIED.

- See this.

- When I was little I used to have a save before the Ocelot battle and play it over and over. PROTIP, THOUGH - ammo during boss battles is repawning, so you won't run out as long as it's the weapon you need to actually win the battle.

- One of Master Miller's helpful pieces of advice is to take regular toilet breaks because 'You never know when a long cutscene will begin'. Truest thing a game has ever told me.

- OTACON IS THAT AMAZING. Seriously, you'll love him. (Probably not in MGS4, though.)

- I KNOW. Personally, I happen to like him clean-shaven, but it's impossible to find fanart of it. Even the comic book artist got bored of drawing him clean shaven and gave him A SUDDEN BEARD. It's just not fair. Especially since I like to RP him around MG2 - MGS1 era when he doesn't have a beard. Wait I just found a page of doodles now. Excellent.

- That comic: excellent. I'm so glad others have stuck Light into Metal Gear Solid so I don't have to. (Unless that's an in-game screenshot. I do hope it's an in-game screenshot.)

- Awww, that's a shame. 'You stupid fool' may be in-character, but 'you idiot' generally seems a very appropriate reaction to Snake running into the detonator wires. Also, yes, more fun.

- I was so afraid I'd be the only one ever to have seen the gas chamber. Thank you.

- If that gas-filled chamber bit was 'offhanded mocking', I never want to see what the fourth game does. (Except actually I am now really, really curious.)

- Oh, man, the second game has fixed cameras as well? I'll cry.

- I, er, can't really respond to a lack of response.

- That card is so true. Seriously, Naomi? 'Highly developed senses of hearing and vision'? Seriously?

- Oh, thank you for that advice on boss battle ammo! Makes sense, really; I assume the designers don't actually want to completely trap you and then laugh about it.

AND AT THIS POINT I CEASE MY POINT-BY-POINT RESPONDING. JUST BECAUSE.

(What happens to Otacon in MGS4? (Actually, I'm probably not going to understand the answer to this question, am I?))

I never want to see what the fourth game does.

You don't, seriously. It's not very good, and it's mean. I'm not going to go into detail about what happened, but I will tell you that it took six months before I could cook food in the microwave again. And leave it at that.

Also, on the bubblegum card page, did you see the second comment down?

(Also, in MGS4, basically the ongoing line of his character development is that he gets stronger and deals with more and more crap and gets stronger and so on. MGS4 kind of sent him back to a worse place than where he starts in MGS1. He wasn't OOC or anything, just frustratingly unlikable. If you have to go out of your way to play MGS4, really don't bother. Not worth it, even though Snake is really awesome in it and the acting is great.)

Hello! People who throw Pokémon into places where Pokémon should not technically be are the best sort of people, so you're very welcome here. (Although that cow-with-a-chainsaw icon is absolutely terrifying.)

Yeah, I get that a lot. I picked it up about five years ago and never bothered to switch it. I haven't a clue where it came from, either. o.o;

And thank God, someone else who uses the 'é' in Pokémon.

(Although, knowing LJ, it's gonna mess it up in my post. *rolls eyes*)

If you have an 'Alt Gr' key on your keyboard, holding it down and pressing the 'e' key should create the 'é', which may possibly fix the 'é' problem if you're copying and pasting.

(It annoys me to a possibly irrational extent when people don't use the 'é'. They're not called Pokemon! They're just not! They have nothing to do with poking!)

Apparently, if I use the reply feature in my email, it screws up. On LJ, it works fine.
