Why Is The Duck The Only One Surprised By All The Animal-People?

sort of exhausted really
I have now watched the first four episodes of Princess Tutu! futuresoon is entirely responsible for this.

Here are my thoughts: what?

Here, to further illustrate said thoughts, is an exchange I had with my housemate when I was in the middle of the second episode:

Riona: Oh no! An anteater in a school uniform is asking out the boy the duck-girl likes!
th_esaurus: ...
th_esaurus: This isn't a real series.
th_esaurus: I'm not okay with this.

(One of my favourite moments in that particular episode comes when the boy's schoolmates learn that he is going out with an anteater. There is general shock - not because his girlfriend is an anteater, but because they thought he liked someone else.)

Princess Tutu, as far as I can tell, is about a girl who is secretly a magical ballerina who is secretly a duck who solves people's problems by dancing with them. It is even stranger than it sounds. I sort of love it already. Ahiru is incredibly endearing.

(Ahiru is also the easiest character to assign a Pokémon ever. Psyduck. Sorted. Oh no, wait, what about Ducklett? It evolves into Swanna, which is a great parallel for Ahiru turning into Princess Tutu! But Psyduck would be so perfect! It's possible to have multiple Pokémon, of course, but for some reason I'm convinced that Ahiru has only one.

Maybe Ahiru is a Ducklett but has a Psyduck.

AHIRU, THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE EASY.)

As Livejournal once again seems to be doing its inexplicable best to drive away its users, I'd like to remind everyone that this journal is also available at Dreamwidth under the same name. If you're planning to migrate over there, let's stay in touch! I have no plans to stop posting to Livejournal, though, so if you're primarily LJ-based there's no problem.

I am now watching the first episode of Princess Tutu, and this is what I have watched so far:

ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A MAN WHO DIED

(I quite literally paused it at this point, just so that I could tell you this, and also laugh)

In other news, I am now watching Gravity Falls. Mabel is my favourite character. She is like me in so many ways, especially in the episode The Hand That Rocks The Mabel (I feel like that situation tends to happen to me more often than not :| except for the psychic part)

Mabel is excellent! I really like how ridiculous she is; I feel that female characters often end up being the voice of reason in comedic programmes, and she's delightfully reason-lacking.

(And I'm very pleased to hear that you're joining me in discovering this bizarre magical ballerina duck anime!)

She really is just completely ridiculous - I love her jumpers. They are the best thing ever.

(and how can I not watch this? It's a ballerina duck. A magical ballerina duck who makes flowers appear when she spins! I am both amazed and amused - this is the best thing ever. I prefer her character design as a duck, she looks sweet and adorable, however, I would love to see her duck self dressed as a ballerina quacking and waddling around everywhere in a ballerina costume - that would be seriously adorable)

PRINCESS TUTU IS TAKING OVER THE WORLD. Or perhaps only tiny sections of the world, but still, more viewers is more viewers. I too recall the days of being very confused as to why all these people were animals and none of the humans seemed to notice this! I kept waiting for there to be an explanation. I don't want to spoil it for you, even though it's really not much of a spoiler, unless you want me to. And Duck is the greatest character! I suspect you will also grow attached to Fakir, once he gets his character development on. And Rue. Maybe not Mytho. His character development is...rather different from the others', as you will see.

Duck's Psyduck would be the kind of Psyduck that bumbles along until things are really important and then turns out to be the greatest psychic in the land. She herself could definitely be a (very clumsy) Ducklett that evolves into Swanna when needed but somehow de-evolves when not. Rue would have...well actually I can think of a few things for her but they are, again, spoilery. Fakir would have an Umbreon. There is no question of this.

Mytho has a Magikarp. There is, again, no question of this.

The subs I've been watching (I've decided I'm going to watch the first five episodes, then muster all my limited self-control and wait for the DVD to arrive) call the prince 'Mute', which I assumed was a reference to the mute swan. 'Mytho' doesn't fit nearly so neatly into all the weird waterbird stuff, alas, although I suppose it works with all the weird story stuff.

She herself could definitely be a (very clumsy) Ducklett that evolves into Swanna when needed but somehow de-evolves when not.

I misread 'Ducklett' as 'Diglett'. That was confusing.

(And thank you for holding back on spoilers! I like to know as little as possible about what's to come.)

The online subs I first watched the show with had Ahiru, Fakia, and Mute, which I later discovered are not the intended versions, at least not 'Fakia' and 'Mute'; 'Fakir' is meant to be a reference to magic, and 'Mytho' is indeed a reference to mythos, which the show directly mentions at one point. The debate over Ahiru vs. Duck goes on today, and initially I went with Ahiru because it's the one I knew best and it's written down at one point in the show, but honestly, the duck references go on so much better in English if she actually is called Duck. In Japanese, sure, Ahiru, but the fact that we need subtitles at all is a real indicator that we are not Japanese.

There's really no excuse for 'Mute', though. I think those subs later change it, as with 'Fakia' and another character who starts as 'Claire' but whose actual properly translated name might actually be a spoiler so I won't say it. (If you can figure out on your own her real name from 'Claire', I will be very, very impressed.)

It is best to not be spoiled for this show! There are many things in that are WHOA WAIT WHAT JUST HAPPENED, and they would not have had as much effect if I knew they were coming.

I'm tempted to call our main character Ente, because the series seems to be set in a German-speaking country. LET'S THROW A THIRD ANGLE INTO THIS AHIRU DEBATE.

(I'm not really going to call her Ente. Even though it would be quite a nice name.)

There actually are two characters named after German words, mysteriously enough, and not subtle ones either. Plus the animal names are all puns in Japanese (which get translated well enough in English), and 'Mytho' is Greek, and...yeah, the languages of Princess Tutu can be a headache. I usually just ignore them in favor of the magical ballerina duck saving people with the power of dance. That makes much more sense.
