Now Where Do I Put My Shoes?

sort of exhausted really
On a strange whim, I ordered a few volumes of DN Angel, as I loved the anime in my teenage years and used copies of the manga are available incredibly cheaply on Amazon.

What a great whim. I remember being frustrated when I tried to look up discussion of the anime and all I could find was people criticising it for not living up to the manga, but the manga really is a delight.

The third volume contains a little 'day in the life of Satoshi Hiwatari' feature, and it is just the saddest thing; it boils down to 'he wakes up at seven and goes to school without having breakfast and watches Daisuke and eats bread for lunch on the roof and goes home and eats dinner alone and does research until one in the morning'. His life is so monotonous and empty. No wonder he's so fixated on Daisuke and Dark; they're the only sources of spontaneity in his existence.

Satoshi is even more painfully in love with Daisuke than I remember from the anime. If you insist that Satoshi has no romantic feelings for Daisuke, and I've no doubt there are people who do (someone once commented on one of my Doctor Who fics to insist that Captain Jack Harkness was completely straight), you're wrong. You are factually wrong. It's as simple as that.

(I like that the mangaka seems determined to include them in a minimum of three homoerotic scenes per volume.)

The manga occasionally seems to hint at a future Satoshi/Risa pairing. I really hope it doesn't go in that direction; I'd be fine with them as friends, but the two of them sit somewhere below absolute zero on the metaphorical romantic chemistry thermometer. I'm generally quite relaxed when it comes to pairings; I'll happily accept most canonical couples, even if I don't 'ship them myself. Satoshi/Risa is one of the very few pairings I viscerally dislike.

I wonder why I have such an adverse reaction to the idea of Satoshi/Risa? It can't just be because of my fondness for Satoshi/Daisuke, because I like Daisuke/Riku. I think perhaps it's because some part of me is convinced that Satoshi needs to be alone forever. Giving him an attainable love interest uproots everything that makes Satoshi Satoshi. Sorry, kid. I do love you; I just... also happen to want you to remain trapped in your lonely, unhealthily obsessive life for ever.

I'd forgotten how ridiculously endearing Daisuke was. He's just so sweet! If the characters of DN Angel were ever locked down inside a school and instructed to kill each other to escape, à la Dangan Ronpa, he would be the Makoto Naegi of the group. (That scenario wouldn't really work, though; everyone in DN Angel is in love with everyone else, so it's hard to envision any murders actually taking place. It's almost a shame; Daisuke would make a great Naegi and Satoshi would make a great Kirigiri. On the other hand, it's probably best not to think about this crossover for too long. My money's on Risa offing Takeshi.)

Any DN Angel fans out there? Or people on the lookout for manga featuring endearing characters, magical transformations and massive ridiculous love polygons? (If you like massive ridiculous love polygons and you're not familiar with DN Angel, you need to rectify this right now.)

I know nothing about DN Angel. Aside from massive ridiculous love polygons (which I don't actively dislike, but are not the kind of thing to make me seek out a show), what happens?

Here is the basic concept of DN Angel:

Daisuke: Hello! My name is Daisuke. I have an insane mother and a massive crush on a girl called Risa.
Daisuke's Insane Mother: (constantly booby-traps the house so whenever Daisuke comes home he has to run a ridiculous deadly gauntlet)
Daisuke: It's my fourteenth birthday!
Risa: (is all pretty)
Daisuke: OH GOD WHAT I JUST TRANSFORMED INTO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GUY
Daisuke's Insane Mother: Happy fourteenth birthday, sweetie! By the way, when they hit fourteen the men of our family turn into a legendary art thief whenever they experience romantic feelings. All the weird gauntlets were training you for theft!
Daisuke: Er, what?
Daisuke's Insane Mother: NOW GO AND STEAL THIS STATUE, SWEETIE, I'M SO PROUD OF YOU
Daisuke: ...what?

It is extremely odd and I love it. (If you ever check it out, I'd probably recommend the manga over the anime, because the anime makes even less sense.)

Ooh, that does sound incredibly weird, and also potentially somewhat fun!

I absolutely LOVED D.N Angel when I was a teenager! I have a lot of the manga (I think I have about 7-8 volumes, I could be wrong and it could be more, but I've had to box them all away until I get my own place and a lot of shelves), and just thinking about it now makes me grin like an idiot Magic!Girl/Boy manga FTW!.

And yes! Daisuke would totally be the Naegi of the group in a Dangan Ronpa situation.

The Dangan Ronpa crossover really wouldn't work, would it? The significant school-aged characters so far (I'm up to the end of volume five) are Daisuke, Satoshi, Riku, Risa and Takeshi, which really isn't enough for a good murder game, particularly with all the emotional links. Congratulations, DN Angel cast: I am unlikely to put you at the mercy of Monobear, and even if you did end up in that situation Daisuke might be able to hold you all together.

No, I'm so ridiculously happy about this because how could anybody subject those poor characters to the nightmare of Monobear? I'm sure everybody, par Satoshi, would cry and need Daisuke cuddles afraid not. I mean, not unless you decided to do the Ultimate Crossover with all the characters that would work in that situation.

I have genuinely considered writing a massive Dangan Ronpa crossover that pulls in school-aged characters from many different fandoms; let's hope I never get around to it. I'm fairly certain Satoshi needs Daisuke cuddles all the time. It's a shame they would make him transform.

What

Hmm. Not sure what to think of the fic, but I do have something else to say, and this might sound homophobic, although I assure you, I'm not, but I hate it when people say Jack is/was bisexual, in the confidentials, the actor who plays him explains why Jack appears to be bisexual, but assures the fans that Jack is straight.

?????

I am fairly certain that there is no claim that Jack is straight in the confidentials. If there is, the writers are really bad at portraying straight characters. (Also, I should note that I didn't say Jack was 'bisexual' (I don't think that's the word I'd use for him); I just portrayed him as in love with both the Doctor and Rose.)

I say again, what. I would expect Barrowman to be the last person to claim Jack was straight and RTD told us practically from the beginning that he was pansexual. Maybe they're from some weird alternate universe where everything is topsy-turvy and accidentally accessed our internet instead?

And for that matter, since when has canon had anything to do with shipping?

(Well, he obviously was.)

(This is unrelated, but while I was typing the comment the tab icon just above your icon flashed briefly and it looked as though the chap in your icon was winking at me.)

DN Angel! Memories. Oh, Satoshi. Oh, poor, sad, horribly in love, obsessive Satoshi.

Looking back, I think I loved Daisuke's mom the most.

(I have no DN Angel icons, so have the next closest thing: an icon featuring two popstars having a dance-off in a hospital over a pretty princess giant robot pilot. I love anime.)

Satoshi is breaking my heart. He's just quietly accepted the fact that, for the sake of keeping Krad at bay, he can't ever allow himself to care about anyone. It's awful.

I'd forgotten how very strange Daisuke's mother was. None of your parenting decisions are sensible, Emiko!
