hope is all we have
I'm now up to episode ten, and, okay, Yuri!!! on ICE is possibly the cutest thing I've ever watched. If you're on the lookout for something cheerful, endearing and homoerotic, I recommend it enthusiastically. (Unless there's a massive tonal shift in the final two episodes, I suppose, but a) that's unlikely, and b) if that did happen, the first ten episodes would still be magical and beautiful.) It's available on Crunchyroll here!

Bless the tenth episode. I was thinking 'hey, you can't tell us there was a drunken dance-off and not show us!', and then along came the closing credits. I love how incredibly serious Yurio's expressions are during the dance-off. Of course they are. Bless you, Yurio.

Yurio's expressions are also wonderful whenever JJ is anywhere in the vicinity. I love his outraged glare.

Other things I love:

- Yurio starting to shout encouragement to Yuri and then cutting himself off.
- Yurio running away in alarm when he thinks Yuri is going to hug him.
- Yurio making incredibly grumpy overtures of friendship towards Yuri. (Yurio going 'UGH, THAT GUY' but slowly, reluctantly warming up to that guy is my favourite thing. I like to imagine he's reading this post and going WHAT, NO, I'M NOT WARMING UP TO ANYONE, FUCK YOU.)
- Yurio's fashion sense revolving around cats. I was already highly amused by his taste for tiger and lion T-shirts, but it took me a while to realise all the leopard print also fit in with the 'big cats' theme!
- Victor having absolutely no concept of personal space.
- Phichit being enthusiastic and supportive when he thinks Yuri and Victor are married. (And Victor going 'ha, no, of course we're not married, we're engaged.')
- my housemates shouting 'ARE YOU SERIOUS?????' in incredulous delight at the screen whenever something gay happens, i.e. constantly.

Early in the series, one of my housemates mentioned that some people argue online that Yuri and Victor are ENTIRELY HETEROSEXUAL, NO EROS THERE. This is pretty hilarious in itself, but it became particularly hilarious after their kiss and Yurio's furious reaction. In the universe of Yuri!!! on ICE, social media no doubt blew up with the news of that kiss, and I can imagine Yurio was the one angrily typing THERE WAS NOTHING BEHIND IT, IT WAS A FRIENDLY KISS, THEY'RE JUST FRIENDS, THEY'RE BARELY FRIENDS, THEY'RE JUST TOLERATING EACH OTHER, SCREW YOU ALL.

Has someone written fanfiction about this? This show really seems to cry out for fic about the characters' ill-advised adventures on social media.

...wow, there are over ten thousand works on AO3 for Yuri!!! on ICE. The last thing I wrote for (Oxenfree) had about sixty, so I'm sort of reeling from this. Ten thousand! How is that even possible? This show only came out four months ago!

Watching Yuri on Ice while it was airing was a magical experience, especially episodes 7 and 10. In the early days, a popular (and derided) theory was that Victor was just using Yuuri for some reason or another and didn't actually care about him, and then episode 7 happened, and there was so much screaming. And then episode 10 happened and basically everything exploded. Apparently Crunchyroll and Tumblr both went down right after the final episode went up. Yuri on Ice is...kind of a big deal.

Has it really only been four months? Dang. Well, the fandom's pretty nice, now that the conspiracy theories have been stamped out. I know I'm not the only one who's getting a major boost in fic output from it (though I'm currently on guilty hiatus from writing because of video games).

...this is my unsubtle hint that you could totally write that fic about the characters' ill-advised adventures on social media, if you want. *cough*

Hello! It's good to see you here. I'll confess that half the reason I reblogged something Yuri on Ice-related was as a little wave to you; I was going 'hey, I'm watching something futuresoon is interested in, but I don't know whether she still checks Livejournal!'

I can imagine that watching it as it aired would have been a pretty incredible experience. I was spoiled for the fact that Victor/Yuri was canon, obviously - it seems it would be very tricky indeed to avoid hearing about that - but for some reason I'd got it into my head that they kissed in episode 4, so I was very bewildered when it didn't happen. 'Wait, what? Maybe it was the next episode? ...okay, maybe the one after that? ...there is a kiss, right?'

I don't know whether I'll actually write fanfiction - I tend to have trouble writing for text-based canons or canons I experienced in a language other than English, basically anything where I can't actually hear the characters' voices speaking English in my head, although I suppose I managed it with Dangan Ronpa - but, just in case, I have a question: is there a general rule in fanfiction for distinguishing between Yurio and Yuri? This is a particular problem for me because I'd probably be writing from Yurio's point of view, and he's not going to think of himself as Yurio. Hmm. Maybe I could have him think of the other Yuri as Katsuki.

At the moment, though, the only fic ideas coming to mind are the aforementioned social media fic (not the sort of thing I'd usually write, would be a lot easier if I weren't seven years behind on social media trends) and accidental voyeurism where Yurio stumbles across Yuri and Victor making out against a wall and just stares in mute outrage (not a very substantial concept, would require me to be able to write makeouts, might possibly draw moral disapproval from areas of the fandom). Come on, mind, come up with something I might actually be able to manage!

I do indeed still check LJ, though I don't actually post anything these days. I was honestly somewhat delighted to see Yuri on Ice on my friendslist--my current life and my old one colliding, more or less.

People generally differentiate between the two Yuris by spelling the Japanese one "Yuuri"; apparently the actual Japanese fandom avoids this problem because the Japanese Yuri's name is written in one type of kanji and the Russian Yuri's name is written in a different one. But we're not Japanese, so we just change the spelling. I have no idea how podficcers manage.

Oh, God, trying to keep Yuri and Yuuri straight sounds hideously confusing. (No pun intended, although keeping them straight in that sense would also be tricky.) I once wrote a short original piece featuring an Ash and an Alex, and I ended up having to change Alex's name because just 'two short names beginning with A' was enough to make it difficult to read.

I just thought 'hmm, I should look for Yuri on Ice accidental voyeurism fics to see whether anyone's written that Yurio-stumbling-across-makeouts idea', and I came across a fic containing the following line:

So, when [Yurio] realised that he somehow left his lucky skates in Hasetsu, he decided to retrieve them himself and angrily booked a flight.

I'm inordinately delighted by 'angrily booked a flight'. I hope all Yuri on Ice fanfiction just appends 'angrily' to everything Yurio does.

And then I somehow did this. Please enjoy this glimpse into Yuri Katsuki's phone. I definitely did not text myself in order to create this image and definitely am not now listed in my own phone book as 'Yuri Plisetsky'.

Amusingly, "BLOCKED" has been applied to Yurio in multiple fanarts, so you're in the zeitgeist now. (Also "angrily" is often connected to him too. Yurio is, in some ways, a walking meme.) We all suffer for our art.

Listen, I don't go here, but there is SO MUCH fanart and fanart for that anime on Tumblr, I think about 10,000 works came out PER EPISODE

It did seem huge! I hadn't realised it was that huge, though. I've no idea what people are even writing about. There's a part of me that sort of wants to write fanfiction about the furious Russian teenager, but I've no idea where to start; my usual approach is to torment my favourite characters by destroying their perception of reality, and a cute ice skating show doesn't really offer much scope for that.

You don't think some sabotaging idiot or simple fan fuck-up could lead to him being spiked with a hallucinogen? Because that could go someplace. And give Viktor and Yuuri something to worry about.
